It’s pretty simple. When we feel depressed and weak, everything seems to go wrong. When we choose to be cheerful (even when things aren’t going the way we would like them to go), everyday will be filled with more joy and happiness. That’s a paraphrase of a scripture I read this morning.
A couple of months ago, I was a Costco. I had gone in to pick up a couple of items that I needed. I get in line. The lady in front of me had her buggy overflowing with items, as did the lady in front of her. As I stood there, it would have been easy to become discouraged at the long wait. Instead I stood patiently, and remained cheerful.
The lady in front of me turns to me. We exchange pleasantries. After a minute she turns to me again, and says “You only have a couple of things, go ahead of me.” I graciously accept. Then the lady in front of her notices, and says, “You can go ahead of me too.” I skipped two places!
It’s a little thing, and a big thing. In that moment, I became even more grateful, and happy. Here I am months later retelling the story because of the impact of those two ladies at Costco. Would the same things have happened if I we grumpy, and upset? Probably not. Because we reap what we sow.
It’s a simple thing. Really. When things aren’t going well, choose to be cheerful. Your day will bring more joy and happiness.
